Reuters reports that, according to a study published in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head
& Neck Surgery, removing the adenoids of children who experience frequent
respiratory infections is more costly and may not benefit these children more
than when physicians decide on a watchful waiting strategy. Investigators came
to this conclusion after following 111 children with frequent respiratory
infections who were randomly assigned to either immediate adenoidectomy or
watchful waiting for two years.
