Practice at the First Bronchoscopy Room at Nemazee Hospital in Shiraz
December 17, 2014;
According to Web-Da news site at the Public Relations of Shiraz University of the Medical Sciences (SUMS) , Dr Mohammad Ashkan Moslehi, interventional pulmonologist, and the staff member at the pediatrics department at SUMS said,” New pediatric bronchoscope set has been purchased and applied by the support of the CEO of SUMS since May,2014 . This instrument is the most advanced bronchoscope in the country.”
Dr Moslehi, the exclusive delegate of the European Respiratory Society in Iran said, “Between 10 to 15 bronchoscopies per week are performed in this center. “
Bronchoscopes come in two sizes at the pediatric bronchoscopic room among which the 2.8 mm- size headpieces are unique in Iran and utilized for infants over 1.5 kg. The 4.3 mm- size headpieces are also used for the children older than 1 year of age.
Dr Moslehi also said, “Both diagnostic and therapeutic measures are done by using these bronchoscopes. Diagnostic items include inspection of the airways from nose to medium and small respiratory airways, recognition of the entire pulmonary blockages, congenital abnormalities, cysts and narrowing of the pulmonary channels, removing inner lung samples of the patients suffering from lung infection or pulmonary complications such as cancer, microbiologic examinations, cytology, biochemistry inspection, medical mycology, and virology especially in patients suffering from immune deficiencies and being on chemotherapy. Besides, obtaining tissues from the lung without surgery for patients of lower ages is done for the first time in Iran. These samples are used to diagnose infections, different types of cancer and malignancies.
“Following the stated diagnoses, therapeutic measures will be done which include treatment of the different airway narrowing, removal of the entire blockages due to mucous plugs especially in hospitalized patients on intensive care, extracting the foreign bodies from the lungs, drug injection to pulmonary injuries such as cancer masses and microbial masses, lung washing in order to remove infectious secretions or the proteins from the inside of the lungs.
“Different electrocautery (burning of the glands or masses or lining inside the lungs) by light anesthesia and without surgery is also done in just several minutes. All the mentioned operations will result in the shortening of the length of hospital stay. “
Dr Moslehi also stated that rigid intubation (pipe insertion with the intention of opening the airways) in infants and children is done by bronchoscope in the pediatric bronchoscopy room. He also said,” Stent placing( placing mesh to remove narrowing of the airways resulted from burns of acid or poisonous gasses) will be done in the future provided the required instrument , including laser device, injection forceps, biopsy needles and endobronchial sonography are bought.”
